If you haven’t been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art lately, now is the time to go. There are some beautiful exhibitions going on right now, but you need to hurry to catch them before they’re gone.
I am going to review the Bernini and George Bellows exhibitions in this blog post. I am not going to review the Warhol exhibition in this article because it will be ending soon.
Bernini: Sculpting in Clay
This is an amazing exhibition of the great Roman Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680). To visualize lifesize or colossal marbles, Bernini began by making small, spirited clay models.
Fired as terracotta, these studies and related drawings preserve the first traces of the thought process that evolved into some of the most famous statuary in the city, including the fountains in the Piazza Navona and the angels on the Ponte Sant’Angelo.
This exhibition assembles for the first time some fifty of these bozzetti and modelli, as well as thirty chalk or pen sketches alongside three small-scale bronzes and a marble group.
This is a beautiful exhibition and I strongly suggest that you make a special effort to see this. But hurry, it ends on January 6.
This exhibition features about one hundred works by American representational painter George Bellows. Bellows studied under Robert Henri in New York City during the early part of the twentieth century.
Bellows was a renowned oil painter at the time of his early death in 1925. There is a huge cross section of his work in this exhibition, from landscapes to cityscapes, to portraits and more.
All in all, I was not impressed with this exhibition. I am not a fan of George Bellows. There are many other American artists that I admire more than Bellows. I very much disliked his landscapes and I found most of his portraits to be lackluster as well.
This exhibition by Bellows will be on display at the Met until February 18. So there’s plenty of time to see this one, though I would not recommend that you make a special trip down to see this one only.
