In early 2008, just before the market crash, I received a desperate letter from Eli Sein, a 27 year old artist who was “circling the drain,” pleading for help.
I took it to my mastermind group of art professionals and read everyone the letter, omitting his personal details.
During 2008-2010, almost EVERYONE I knew in the New York City art world was struggling. These guys in my mastermind art group were savvy and determined, and in a failing industry they still grew their businesses. It was the ultimate contrarian move.
Reading the group Eli’s letter triggered a wide-ranging 25 minute conversation among my savvy professional artist friends, spanning tactical moves he should make to all kinds of “inner head trash” stuff.
The things that were put on the table that day became the basis for my eBook, “Secrets to Selling Art.”
After meeting with the group that day, Eli decided to make a massive leap into honing his marketing and selling skills. He plowed everything he could back into his artist business, sharpening his marketing and selling abilities, knowing that at the end of the day, that’s the only asset that you can truly own. He joined our Artist Mastermind group, where he was the more livelier member.
After a few months in the group, though, Eli decided to move on in favor of greener pastures. It was still a very turbulent time for him. I’m not sure but I think he might have taken a job for awhile. He disappeared but I’d hear from him every now and then: “Hey Gary, I’m still out here and I’m paddling hard!”
He wrote me a letter the other day and invited me to his latest show in the Chelsea Arts District in Manhattan. I went down to the opening and took this brief video:

Wanted to say thanks for my training with your group.
As we climb out of things and return to our roots, I said to my wife that everything I am now doing is what I learned from you guys. Sometimes people may question whether or not to spend money with groups like yours and I wanted to make sure that they don’t.
During the high times, we invested in some cases all of our profits from the new ventures into training with your mastermind group. It’s why we are still alive today.
Just last week picked up $2,500 worth of commission work. And I’m having regular shows in Manhattan and Brooklyn. It is directly as a result of my training with you and your friends.
My wife and I know that our first piece of profit we can generate from this rebirth yet again will be back with your group.
