Why do some internet artists who sell art online make money so easily — while you try everything possible and get barely enough customers, sales and profits?
What if there was a way you could convert 15%, 25%—even 50% or more of your online customers, how much more money would you earn as a result?
If you could read just one article about how to turn your efforts into an unstoppable selling machine, this is it.
I dare you to read this entire article and not change the way you sell art online.
A lot of people who write about business will tell you that there is no one magic bullet that will lead you to success. They will tell you there is no secret sauce.
But I’m here to dispel that myth now. There really is a secret sauce. You know what it is?
The Secret Sauce
The Secret Sauce is building relationships with people. It’s starting and growing relationships online. Pretty simple, huh?
Nothing will lead to success in business (Internet or brick and mortar) faster than starting and growing relationships. It doesn’t matter what you sell. Even if you sell harmonicas to nomadic tribes in South Africa, starting and growing relationships will make you the hit of the century in that market.
But a lot of Internet artists get this all wrong. I see it all the time. They put up a static website or a storefront on eBay or Etsy (or some other group artist website), and then they wonder why no one ever buys anything.
Let me ask you one important question: Does a static website or a storefront on eBay or Etsy have the elements to start and grow relationships? Of course not. Those things may be pretty cool and fun to play with, but they’re essentially just like a big billboard in Cyberspace. People may drive by and see it, but they never come back that way to see it again. And they forget about it very, very quickly.
Get the Secret Sauce into Your Online Art Business
So what is the solution? Simple. You need to have a way to effectively start and grow relationships online.
What are some ways to start and grow relationships? Social Media like Facebook and Twitter will do it, of course. And Social Media should certainly be part of your online art business strategy. But it’s not at the top of my list. It’s not the very best way.
What is the best way, then?
For my money, the best way to start and grow relationships online is to use an email newsletter. And, of course, I’m talking about permission-based email marketing only here. Never be a dirty rotten spammer.
Think about it for a minute. What better way to start and grow a relationship with someone than to show up in their personal email inbox every seven to ten days? Are you beginning to see how powerful this is? They can write you back if they have a question or comment. And presto, now you have a conversation going. And conversation is the beginner and sustainer of relationship. Wow! Wow! That’s powerful times infinity. That really is a secret sauce, a magic bullet.
The Two Ingredients of the Secret Sauce
The Secret Sauce has two ingredients to sell art online. Ingredient Number One is: Get the relationship started. And Ingredient Number Two is: Grow the relationship. To get the relationship started, you simply get the person to sign up for your email newsletter. Then you must grow the relationship. How do you do these two things?
There’s lot of ways to get the relationship started, to get people to sign up for your email newsletter. One way is to put a page on your site that advertises and promotes your newsletter. Offer something free (like an ebook or report or coupon) in exchange for their email address. Like I said, there are lots of ways to get the relationship going with someone. But this is how many people do it very successfully.
Once you have the person’s name on your list, then you must continue to grow the relationship. You must send her emails on a regular basis. If you don’t write your new friend often, she will soon forget who you are. Don’t abandon her. Don’t neglect your new friend. Keep in touch with her often and let them know what you’re up to. She will reward you by buying your products or services.
Very Important Note: You must use BOTH ingredients to get the magic of the secret sauce. You can’t just use ingredient Number One and expect magical things. You can’t just start the relationship and then forget about it or only write once or twice a year. You must actively use ingredient Number Two. You must write two to three times a month to keep the relationship growing. Then and ONLY THEN will you start seeing the magic of the Secret Sauce take effect.
A few last words…..
There’s no way around it. The only way to have an abundant life as an artist on the Internet is by starting and growing relationships. It really is the Secret Sauce to succeeding online.
I’m now going to ask you the most important question in this article: What are you waiting for? The sooner you get going with this, the better. When you work hard on starting and growing relationships, your online art business will always prosper.
I use Aweber as my email newsletter provider. It helps me grow and nurture online relationships that make my internet art business successful.
